ISANA VIC/TAS 18th state conference, Melbourne

Victorian Parliamentary Secretary Frank Mcguire opened the 18th VIC/TAS conference held at William Angliss Institute last month.

The committee had designed a very comprehensive program and participants were able to walk away with a tool box of ideas to take back to their work place.
Of the 121 attendees It was exciting to see that 25% were students due to the generous grant From Study Melbourne.

There were many opportunities for networking and it was a day of gratitude to all the professionals especially the student advisors who have worked tirelessly to enhance the student experience.

The One day conference has become an important event in the Victoria / Tasmania branch professional development calendar and has grown in strength over the years.

It is no secret that it has been a challenging year in international education.  ISANA is focused on meeting the needs of those whose lives touch international students. The VIC/TAS 2017 state conference will break new ground by blending knowledge and practice skillfully to leave the delegates feeling invigorated and more able to face the challenges in their association with international students.

Themes to be explored:
Accommodation, visa class changes, use of social media, student support services, OSHC, MYKI, student safety, under 18 students, sexual health and equity, the important of networking and the latest research on international student social network behavior and changes.

Call for Presentations:

We are seeking presenters for the conference, which is shaping up to be an exciting event of presentations, workshops, panel sessions and keynote speakers. If you are passionate about a particular area or issue in relation to working with international students, or if you have experiences to relate which will inform and challenge, we would like to hear from you.

ISANA Conference Student Bursary: Applications Now Open!

Since 2012, ISANA has invited international students from each State and Territory to the Annual National Conference through a Student Conference Bursary.

This Bursary valued at $1000 plus a conference registration is awarded to one student from each State and Territory. The aims of the Student conference bursary are to:

  • Provide opportunities for engagement with other students and professional and academic staff in the international education sector;
  • Ensure that international students interest’s and opinions are heard and noted in general discussion and through presentations;
  • Develop leadership potential in the international student community
  • Disseminate international education information through the student community

We invite ISANA members to nominate continuing international students who will be worthy recipients for your State or Territory. Nominated International students will need to submit complete applications to the ISANA Secretariat isana@isana.org.au by 31st July 2017

On Monday April 10th, Fifty-five International Support professionals gathered in Melbourne to hear from The Commission for Children and Young People

“The day was a very thought provoking and crucial day where the Child Safe Standards were explained and we workshopped scenarios where we had to apply these new standards. Vigorous discussion took place in the workshops and the attendees came to the realisation that the standards have made changes to the way we respond to students and their issues/crises”

The PIE: What role do your organisations play in international education?

“We’re the voice of the students but also the voice of the staff who work with the students”

LM: I think we are the voice of the students. We know a lot of our practitioners are working at the grassroots level and they are interacting with students, so they get to know what students want, and we provide a forum to escalate that.

MAS: ISANA Australia and New Zealand memberships are basically staff who work at the coalface with students. Not only do they get to be the voice of the students, and that’s more so in New Zealand where they don’t have an organisation like the Council of International Students Australia, we deal with students day-in-day-out.

We are able to give feedback of critical information on the effect of any policy changes. With policy legislation changes, we can say ‘hang on a second, if you want to do this, these are the implications it will have’ because we are the ones who will actually be implementing it. So we’re the voice of the students but also the voice of the staff who work with the students.

“Our international student numbers have increased and once they are here we want to retain their skills and knowledge”

LM: Also, with a lot of international student support staff, there’s no formal training and so ISANA is there to provide professional development. Anyone can go into the role, but there’s all these transferable skills we’re looking for, and a lot of them are intuitive skills which are very warm and fuzzy, but that’s what you need in student support. A lot of those people do not have formal training so we provide professional development throughout the year.

With a passion for working with culturally and linguistically diverse youth and communities, Eli has a diverse range of skills, from classroom teacher to academic coordinator, working with higher learning institutions to develop indigenous and settlement programs, and coordinating and facilitating partnership projects, with a priority focus on enabling tangible links between the community and education sectors to promote the wellbeing of youth.

Profile Shelly Arnan
Shelly has seven years of working experience in the multicultural sector in various capacities such as direct client service delivery in resettlement, project management, training, and capacity building. Shelly was born and raised overseas and moved to Australia where she completed tertiary education. Shelly draws from her personal and professional cross-cultural experiences in facilitating discussions with participants to explore strategies to better engage with clients, colleagues and students from different cultural backgrounds.
