SANiTy STATE CONFERENCE
‘Workplace issues, Careers and Employability

2018 has been a year of adapting and complying with the new National Code, making sure paperwork and programs are appropriate for our students.

SANiTy would now like to look forward and offer a broad program looking at graduate experiences, visas and skilled migration, fair work, internships and more. We will look past the lecture theatres and tutorial rooms to the bright futures and opportunities available.
We will share best practice through the eyes of graduates and employers and show how the government is supporting employment prospects through visas and the Employer
Portal.

Dates: Wednesday, 24 October
Time: 9.15am for 9.30am start
Location: The University of Adelaide
Schulz Building Room 307
Cost: $50.00 members or $200 for non-members
RSVP: Wednesday, 17 October 2018

Register: https://cdesign.eventsair.com/isanasec/sa-and-nt-pd

Highlights of the Conference
• Excellent networking opportunities with a variety of international education stakeholders
• Exposure to effective programs delivered first hand by experts
• Exploring best practice from a local and national perspective

It is important that delegates feel connected, supported and empowered in all areas of
international education.

This conference aims to bring participants together to explore
potential challenges in a supportive environment. By attending the conference, participants
will benefit enormously from connecting with more experienced peers, gain valuable exposure to issues they may encounter and derive important feedback for their workplace

ISANA (NSW) partnership on student workplace exploitation project awarded #StudyNSW funding.

We are delighted that Information For Impact: Enabling Education Providers To Address Exploitation Of International Students In Accommodation And At Work has been successfully selected as a StudyNSW Partner Project for 2018-19.

ISANA NSW is a central partner in this landmark project. In addition to UNSW Sydney and UTS: Sydney, other partners include English Australia, the Fair Work Ombudsman, Redfern Legal Centre, education agents, and CISA.

We are writing to providers to seek help with mapping the landscape of information that international students currently receive on working conditions and workplace rights in Australia, and on accommodation.

We would greatly appreciate if your College/University/Provider could please:

  • provide a description, and if possible copies, of examples of information that you provide to students in relation to work rights and accommodation
  • indicate when and how each item is conveyed to students (e.g. email, on website, social media).

We also welcome your views on information that you believe will make an impact in relation to student accommodation and employment.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me should you have any questions.

QLD: Project Global Citizen Survey

Project Global Citizen is a ground-breaking approach to on-boarding international studentsand optimising their experience in Australia.

A pilot project has been awarded Queensland Government support through the Queensland International Education and Training Partnership Fund (IET Partnership Fund) managed by Study Queensland at Trade and Investment Queensland (TIQ). For more information about Project Global Citizen and the consortium, here is the link: http://bit.ly/ProjectGlobalCitizen

Working hand-in-hand with Study Queensland, the Project Global Citizen consortium comprises ISANA Qld, Alphacrane Intercultural Specialists and CTC, Cultural Transition Consulting.

ISANA Qld President Samantha Hilbig is the project sponsor for Project Global Citizen.

2018 Survey and Cultural Quiz for International Students and Industry Professionals

The 2018 Project Global Citizen Survey will measure the cultural challenges that international students encounter during their studies in Queensland.

This will be Queensland’s most extensive global survey to date for identifying cultural competency gaps of students in relation to academic learning, social integration, securing
internships, employment and safety.
Key survey findings will be shared with participating international education industry members to enhance their delivery of services to international students.

The survey findings will also inform the development of Project Global Citizen programs and resources that equip international students with cultural skills to survive and thrive in Australia.

International students who take the survey will receive a personalised Cultural Adjustment Risk Assessment as well as Cultural Adjustment Tips to help them achieve success in their
student experience.

The survey is open until 31 October 2018 and can be accessed from
projectglobalcitizen.com

Project Global Citizen has begun!

With support from the Queensland Government, we hosted an inaugural co-creation event where international education professionals and international student representatives shared their insights into culturally-influenced student challenges.  Their input will inform Project Global Citizen’s ground-breaking approach to on-boarding international students and optimising their experience in Australia.

A big thank you to everyone who generously contributed to the success of our kick-off event.

Thanks to the Project Global Citizen team Samantha Hilbig (QLD Branch President), Livia Tramontina and Astrid Hofmann. Our consortium is lead by the QLD Branch of  ISANA: International Education Association and the project founders are Alphacrane Intercultural Specialists and CTC, Global Transition Consulting.

Thanks to Sean Somerville of Student One – Brisbane’s Premium Student Accommodation provided us with a spectacular event venue.

This project is co-funded with the support of the Queensland Government’s

International Education and Training Partnership Fund, managed by Study Queensland within Trade and Investment Queensland

Expansion of the Tuition Protection Service (TPS)

Expansion of the Tuition Protection Service (TPS)

The new tuition assurance arrangements for non-university higher education providers (NUHEPs) offering FEE-HELP and the VET Student Loans (VSL) program, which will commence on 1 January 2019 subject to the passage of legislation.

The Australian Government has made the decision to expand the Tuition Protection Service (TPS), for international students, to the NUHEP FEE-HELP and VSL programs. The current TPS arrangement will continue as a dedicated service for international students, with its own quarantined account and the same protections and support through placements and refunds. TPS levy arrangements will remain unchanged.

The new model will ensure students, providers and the higher education and training sectors are supported if a provider ceases a course or closes. Providers will be required to pay levies commensurate with their size and risk factors.

Information on the new model will be made available on the department’s website. Consistent with the TPS, the new arrangements will be managed by a statutory appointed Director, who will be supported by an independent Advisory Board. The Director will be the same person as the TPS Director.

The new arrangements do not extend to any other tuition assurance schemes in place for students who pre-pay fees, for example, the tuition assurance requirements under the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015 or the Higher Education Standards Framework 2015.

If you would like further information, the department’s website is being updated with relevant questions and answers, or you can contact the department at:

VET FEE-HELP and VET Student Loans: VETTuitionAssurance@education.gov.au.
