AIEA: Leaders in International Higher Education

The Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA)  is the only association dedicated exclusively to senior leaders in the field of international education. AIEA members are senior international officers who serve as leaders of higher education institutions and of organizations that support international higher education.

AIEA brings together international education leaders into dialogue with each other, their counterparts around the world, organizations that promote international education, and organizations concerned with the shaping and management of international higher education. AIEA gives members opportunities to join forces, share institutional strategies, and provide an effective voice on matters of public policy.

AIEA is pleased to be hosted by Duke University, based in Durham, North Carolina, United States.

Brisbane International Student Hub Afternoon Tea

Friday 28th April saw a productive, fun and informative afternoon tea at The Edge at the State Library, which is the home of the Brisbane Student Hub.  It is a great drop in and work space for international students to use. Students can access help in the form of  information, advice and referrals on healthcare, employment, budget management, accommodation and legal services, as well as connecting students to local events and activities. Thank you to Multicultural Development Association for putting on this event. ISANA members from both tertiary, secondary and TAFE attended and we met many of the Brisbane student ambassadors, who are clearly doing a wonderful job.

ISANA Conference Student Bursary: Applications Now Open!

Since 2012, ISANA has invited international students from each State and Territory to the Annual National Conference through a Student Conference Bursary.

This Bursary valued at $1000 plus a conference registration is awarded to one student from each State and Territory. The aims of the Student conference bursary are to:

  • Provide opportunities for engagement with other students and professional and academic staff in the international education sector;
  • Ensure that international students interest’s and opinions are heard and noted in general discussion and through presentations;
  • Develop leadership potential in the international student community
  • Disseminate international education information through the student community

We invite ISANA members to nominate continuing international students who will be worthy recipients for your State or Territory. Nominated International students will need to submit complete applications to the ISANA Secretariat isana@isana.org.au by 31st July 2017

International Student Exploitation in the spotlight

Work exploitation of international students
The recent story on SBS on the exploitation of international students in the Vietnamese hospitality sector is unfortunately not a new story. It is distressing to read that the exploitation of vulnerable international students is a continued practice. The article does note importantly that it takes two parties for this practice to occur. Students are sometimes willing to accept poor working conditions because they are either ignorant of their rights or preferring to accept under-payment to unemployment.  ISANA reminds all members of the news in an earlier newsletter where we informed members of efforts by DIBP and the FWO to address work exploitation of international students. Here is the excerpt:

Temporary visa holder like international students with a work entitlement and who may have been exploited, need to be aware that DIBP will generally not cancel a visa, detain or remove individuals, provided they have reported their circumstance to the FWO.  Please make this information known to your international students. For more information, please refer to the media release from Minister for Employment, Sen. M Cash and Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Hon P Dutton of 15 February 2017.

No doubt, most of you would have noted that international education has been in the news lately and unfortunately, the news has caused concerns. I encourage members to follow ISANA on Facebook and Twitter for the latest news on international education.

457 visa changes
The recently announced changes to the 457 visa sub-class has received quite a bit of coverage. While the changes do not extend to student visas, there have been concerns amongst students about to graduate of the impact these changes will have on them. This is particularly concerning for research students. A recent article in The Australian strengthens Universities Australia request for urgent clarification on the changes. Importantly, they have highlighted the continuing need for Australia to recruit world leading global researchers and academics. ISANA supports UA and the many start-up companies that will benefit from the talent that is currently being trained in our universities and research institutes.

On Monday April 10th, Fifty-five International Support professionals gathered in Melbourne to hear from The Commission for Children and Young People

“The day was a very thought provoking and crucial day where the Child Safe Standards were explained and we workshopped scenarios where we had to apply these new standards. Vigorous discussion took place in the workshops and the attendees came to the realisation that the standards have made changes to the way we respond to students and their issues/crises”

ACEN Scholarships – Applications now open

2017 Student Scholarships now open
Eight scholarships of $1,500
Applications are now open for scholarships to provide financial support for students undertaking a work integrated learning (WIL) placement in a regional or remote area of Australia as part of their 2017/2018 university studies.
Once again eight scholarships to the value of $1,500 each are being offered to eligible university students who may experience financial disadvantage from having to complete a WIL placement. The scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis and assessed against the criteria.
Applications close on April 21, 2017
The 2017 ACEN Scholarship applicants:
  • Must be from institutions that are financial members of ACEN. (See http://acen.edu.au/list-of-financial-institutions/ for a list of current financial institutions.)
  • Must be studying a postgraduate or undergraduate degree program which requires a WIL placement as a part of their studies
  • Both domestic and international students are eligible to apply.

Volunteers Needed for Sudirman Badminton Cup

Sudirman Cup 2017, the largest badminton tournament in the world which will be held for the first time in Australia from May 21-28 on the Gold Coast.

The Sudirman Cup involves over 1500 of the best male and female badminton players from 32 countries and featuring the stars from Asian badminton powerhouse countries China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia. It is one of the most popular sports in Asia and has an estimated 220 million players across the world.

We are running a Community Ambassador Program on behalf of Badminton Australia, Gold Coast City Council and Tourism Events Queensland to engage student leaders from the participating countries. This is a great opportunity for students to take an active role in the tournament and represent their country of origin.

What is the Sudirman Cup 2017 Student Community Ambassador Program? 

The Community Ambassador Program is a program where selected leaders in the participating communities (i.e. Chinese, Thai, Malaysian, Singapore, Indian, Indonesian, Korean, Hong Kong etc) will be awarded an honorary title of a Community Ambassador to spread the key messages about the tournament in any capacity they can, particularly through their personal and social networks and events. Leaders can come from the below list (but not limited to):

  • Local student leaders and groups
  • University representatives (including University professors, researchers and lecturers etc)
  • International student leaders and groups
  • Community specific sports clubs on campus
  • Badminton players (Male and female badminton current and past players as well as Badminton enthusiasts)

Community Ambassadors can also assist in supporting student groups to attend matches and join other community members from the general community and other universities to come together in official fan groups to support their countries.

Students appointed to the program will receive a uniform, Ambassador kit and tickets to see their country of origin’s qualifying matches.
