Invitation from CISA President

I am humbled, honoured and privileged to pen down my heartfelt greetings to you all as the National President of Council of International Students Australia.

The Council of International Students Australia (CISA) was founded in 2010, since then CISA has been the peak representative body of the international students in Australia advocating their interests and needs and contributing towards their prosperity in Australia.

CISA puts a premium on multiculturalism and gives priority to the engagement of international students underpinning the workplace exploitation issues, welfare considerations, academic and career development of past, present and prospective international students.

It is with a great pleasure that I announce the 8th CISA National Conference; the largest event of international students Australia wide – will be held in Cairns, Queensland from 25th to 27th June with participation of over 150 participants including University, VET/TAFE, ELICOS and school leaders, student services and support staff from all sectors, federal, state and local government representatives, service industry providers, media representatives and the likes across the hierarchy of international student community all over Australia.

It is with a proud honour that I restate, remarking a significant milestone in the history of CISA and the international community as a whole, we have appointed a Women’s Officer for the first time. To establish a firm representation of female international students in Australia; by providing advocacy for women’s rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes. Through this, CISA puts a premium on women’s engagement and leadership.

As CISA recognises women’s participation in governance and decision making for the international students, we highly encourage you to nominate outstanding female leaders from your institution, to be elected for the 2018/2019 CISA Executive Committee, where an inspiring change will be made over the next tenure for the betterment of international students in Australia as a whole.

Additionally, we will be implementing a student guild panel discussion session exclusively for our member associations, this session will be catered to the international student representatives of universities across Australia, and the selected members would have the opportunity to discuss a set of topics and questions for the duration of the session.

The idea for this session is to create a sense of belonging and leadership for the representatives chosen as well as to be able to have a feel for what’s happening across Australia on an institutional level.

If this is an opportunity your association would like to be a part of, please send our Chief Marketing Officer – Ralph (marketing@cisa.edu.au) an expression of interest which would ideally include:

  • Name of International Student Representative that would be sent on behalf of your association
  • Projects and Influential International Student eventsyour association has rolled out during the 2017-18 tenure
  • Impact and outcome of those projects (150 words)
  • What discussion topic would you ideally like to tackle and why? (150 words)
  • Which other university association would you like on the panel and why? (50 words)

Once the panellists are finalised, Ralph will send through the discussion areas and a draft of the session. This session would require adequate preparation and research in order for you to have a constant conversational flow during the session. Please note that the deadline to send in an EOI is: Sunday 10th June, 11:59 (AEST) and finalists will be contacted on Wednesday 13th June.

This will be a worthwhile opportunity to raise your voice and bring yourself forth for the betterment of all international students in Australia. I look forward to welcoming you in Cairns.

I take this moment to thank all of our active members for their enormous support, endless motivation and valuable guidance to implement CISA strategies and execute CISA plans over the last year. I am indeed grateful to all of you for your contribution towards the success of CISA affairs, on behalf of the international student community in Australia. We do appreciate your engagement in the past, as CISA’s stakeholders and we encourage you to join-in-hand in the future agendas of CISA.

Last but not least, I would like to extend my gracious invitations to all our members to participate and represent your institution at the National Conference this June.

Best Regards,

Bijay Sapkota

From a 2017 Conference Student Bursary Winner

The strong impression that welcomed me at the Annual ISANA Conference of 2017 was the multidisciplinary commitment to help international students reach their full potential in Australia.

The confluence of local and international educators, student support advisors, government representatives, wellbeing practitioners convinced me of their genuine interests in both professional and personal development of students like me.

I would like to sincerely thank ISANA for a generous bursary that supported my interstate travel to Gold Coast and the opportunity to meet liked minds.
