Cross Cultural Competency Training

Being aware of cultural differences is crucial for delivering services to international students.  Multicultural Development Association’s ready-to-apply strategies for managing these differences will help you achieve better international student engagement.

This one-day workshop addresses common challenges faced by corporate and academic staff including:

  • Communication barriers (verbal and non-verbal)
  • Different cultural expectations around the roles of students and educators
  • Unintentional barriers to learning
  • Duty-of-care for international students / culture-shock

Guest Speaker: Eli Moore & Shelly Arnan

Profile Eli Moore
With experience in both Australia and internationally developing education, settlement, social justice and community development initiatives, Eli has over 10 years experience delivering professional development sessions for educators and other professionals on strategies to work effectively in cross-cultural environments. With a passion for working with culturally and linguistically diverse youth and communities, Eli has a diverse range of skills, from classroom teacher to academic coordinator, working with higher learning institutions to develop indigenous and settlement programs, and coordinating and facilitating partnership projects, with a priority focus on enabling tangible links between the community and education sectors to promote the wellbeing of youth.

Profile Shelly Arnan
Shelly has seven years of working experience in the multicultural sector in various capacities such as direct client service delivery in resettlement, project management, training, and capacity building. Shelly was born and raised overseas and moved to Australia where she completed tertiary education. Shelly draws from her personal and professional cross-cultural experiences in facilitating discussions with participants to explore strategies to better engage with clients, colleagues and students from different cultural backgrounds.

Being aware of cultural differences is crucial for delivering services to international students.  MDA prioritises active and productive engagement with students through the implementation of practical strategies during their settlement in a new environment. This workshop will strive to demystify cultural expectations and unlock the potential of working effectively with international students through unpacking unintentional barriers to learning and communication.
