Are You OK?

Presenter: Coby Liew, counsellor, social worker, and a licensed mental health trainer in Australia

The world is pretty topsy-turvy right now, because of the global panic around COVID19. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed by it all, rest assured that this is a normal response, and it’s important to take time for self-care.

Self-care is a popular topic these days, and it is often the first thing that gets sacrificed when life is busy and stressful. Many people often think that taking time for themselves seems indulgent; but, looking after your own wellbeing will help you get through this challenging time, and provide better care for others. “Please put on your own oxygen mask first before helping others!” Many of us have heard this important rule on flight safety recordings and it’s a useful phrase to remind us about the importance of self-care – if you don’t look after yourself first, you won’t be able to help yourself or others.

The emphasis in this self-care PD session is on assisting with the emotional wellbeing of the person providing and/or offering care to others, and for this reason, the skills you learn may be applied to very common, everyday situations, especially when working with individuals from different backgrounds and cultures. This PD session will take you through the reasons why you need at least some sort of self-care in your routine, explore different types of self-care strategies, and learn from each other’s journey. There will be plenty of opportunity to interact and engage with other participants, and we will be doing some group activities together.
